VI. "Women In Police Organization An Extravagant Eccentricity"?

The possibility of women functioning as full members in the male-bastion of the police was not well perceived, in the early years of evolution of police system. Even in United Kingdom, which was pioneer in introduction and utilization of women in police organisation, in 1821 the policewomen were described as "extravagant eccentricity" and no wonder quite a few States including Tamil Nadu declared that recruiting women in police department as most unwise when the Chairman of the Punjab Police Commission 1961-62 sought the opinion for the same. However, changes in the social situation with increased association of woman in the performance of field duties in several branches of administration and the problems arising from increased juvenile delinquency and involvement of women in crimes, either as victims of accused progressively necessitated the employment of women police officers as such, in a variety of police tasks. Women police have now become an integral part of the police force in almost all countries of the world.
