Dear Friends,

All great traditions are inspired by a vision but their journey commences from humble beginnings. The same has been the story in over a year of the existence of Uttaranchal Police. Our story begins from 9th Nov2000 when the Police Headquarters of Uttaranchal began functioning. For all of us there was an acute sense of awareness that we were pioneers embarking on an uncertain but exciting journey. We also knew that not many expected us to succeed and create a space and an image for ourselves detached from the legacy of the past.

In 35 years of my service this was truly, a unique challenge. We were short of resources but made up for that with an abundance of enthusiasm and innovation. And it is with these tools that we began the task of creating Uttaranchal Police.

In the past one year, much has been achieved as reported elsewhere in this newsletter, but much more remains to be done. Greater challenges are in store for us including the first Assembly Elections due sometime in February, to be followed by elections for the local bodies. Given what we have achieved in the year gone by, I am sure we will rise to these challenges with dedication and determination. The seed we planted with such care and effort a year ago has sprouted and taken root. It will be a majestic tree, of that I have no doubt.

With best wishes for the New Year,
A.K. Sharan
