A
year in the life of Uttaranchal Police

The
history of the Uttaranchal movement itself had left an atmosphere of distrust
for police. Many within the state doubted even the necessity and expense
of maintaining a police force. With nothing to lose and everything
to gain, with a committed team of officers the DGP began the task of charting
a vision and direction for Uttaranchal Police consistent with the expectations
of the people of Uttaranchal.We began with giving ourselves a motto
: Uttaranchal Police- Your Friend.

And in line with this motto we made
changes in our uniform to create a more people-friendly image. Soon after
we were presented with our colours by the Chief Minister.

Our
first task was to identify and occupy a suitable building for police Headquarters.
With a bit of luck and ingenuity, today we possess a state-of-the -art
PHQ. Simultaneously we began work on a deatailed modernization plan for
Uttaranchal Police. Over the next five years we will receive assistance
that will greatly enhance the capabilities of Uttaranchal Police.
We also
went online on our First Anniversary when our website was inaugarated by
Shri L.K. Advani.

Keeping
in mind the acute shortage of manpower, we also embarked on a drive to
recruit 2000 constables and 1000 ex-serviceman. Our high standards of integrity
and transparency in recruitment have received praise and appreciation from
the highest authorities in the state and the country.
The
successful solving of the Corbett killings and the Phoolan Devi murder
case are two of our proudest moments.

In various
encounters a record 15 criminals were eliminated while 9 of our finest
laid down their lives in the cause of duty. We also conducted the yatra
season without any hitches entirely on our own steam.. Large fesitvals
like the Kanwar Mela in Haridwar and Shravan Shivratri in Neelkanth, Pauri
were conducted smoothly.
For
us it has been an exciting year. The future remains an undiscovered country.
Under an inspiring leadership we are more than prepared for it.
